About this place
A rich chocolate terrine layered with a touch of salt and a spoonful of whipped cream is the natural place to start at Sozo no Ame. Rather than feeling heavy, the cacao lingers cleanly on the palate, shaped and tempered by the salinity. To accompany it, the kissaten brews house blends named after writers such as Maugham and Poe, alongside light- and dark-roast single-origin selections, offering a choice between deep bitterness and crisp, fruit-toned acidity.
Dessert options reach well beyond chocolate. The counter features baked goods and sweets that reflect meticulous handcraft: seasonal blancmange scented with almond alongside berry sauce and strawberries, unpretentious scones with a crisp bite, and pound cake infused with the aroma of roasted green tea. Classic kissaten drinks also receive thoughtful touches, such as a lemon-brightened melon soda topped with vanilla bean ice cream and an almond tuile.
As late afternoon settles in, the menu shifts comfortably toward apéro offerings. Guests can linger over homemade pain de campagne, red wine campagne, or Jamón Serrano and cheese, paired with Heartland or Heineken beer, single malt whiskies like Talisker and Laphroaig, or a pour of Tanqueray No. 10 gin.
Inside, raw concrete walls balance warm wood counters, surrounded by quiet background music and stacks of paperback literature. Seating is deliberately limited, and payment is cash only. Located a relaxed walk from the station, it provides an unhurried corner for turning pages over a measured cup and something sweet.
